In just three short weeks, the UK votes on whether to leave or remain in the European Union. It is likely to be the single most important vote of our lifetimes.
If we leave, both Britain and the European Union will be dramatically weakened. There would certainly be economic turbulence. We would lose our rights to travel and study, live and work freely in any EU country. But more importantly, the EU is the most successful project for peace, democracy, social protection and human rights the world has ever seen. The idea that we would weaken it now - as the world struggles with technological change, environmental damage, and political extremism and instability - that is not what we stand for as a party. Labour is voting 'IN'.
Our challenge as a local party is to get the residents of Vauxhall to feel the importance of this referendum, and to exercise their right vote. Many people here are supportive of EU membership. But that only matters if they actually cast their vote on the 23rd. Referendums are unusual because everyone's vote counts the same across the whole country. There are no safe seats, and the outcome is currently uncertain.
Many people have not made up their minds yet. Many of the people we are speaking to on the doorstep in Vauxhall haven't really engaged yet with the issues. The 'air war' on radio, television and in the newspapers has passed them by. But when we speak to them in person, they listen and engage with the arguments. It doesn't take long to get a strong positive response. We also need to be visible, getting literature through their letterboxes.
In order to reach people, we need more people out campaigning and delivering leaflets and direct mail. If you can spare an hour or two, you will be making a difference in a truly important campaign. Please get involved!
